Bring Your Own Device with SoftPOS
Posted by Sean Ruhland on 27th Jul 2026
For today’s consumers, speed, convenience, and flexibility are expected at checkout. Customers are already comfortable using their phones, watches, contactless cards, and digital wallets to pay quickly, and businesses are now able to bring that same simplicity into in-person payment acceptance.
SoftPOS allows a compatible smartphone or tablet to function as a secure contactless payment acceptance device. Instead of relying on a traditional terminal or external card reader, merchants can accept eligible contactless credit cards, debit cards, and mobile wallet payments directly through an approved payment app on a compatible NFC-enabled device.
For small businesses, mobile service providers, pop-up shops, restaurants, delivery teams, field services and events. SoftPOS can create a faster and more flexible checkout experience without adding more hardware.
What is SoftPOS?
SoftPOS, or Software Point-of-Sale, is a software-based payment acceptance solution that turns a off-the-shelf mobile device, such as a smartphone or tablet, into a contactless point-of-sale device.
A customer simply taps their contactless card, phone, or wearable near the merchant’s compatible mobile device to complete the payment. Depending on the provider, SoftPOS may be used as a standalone mobile payment option or as an extension of an existing POS system.
In 2026, SoftPOS is no longer just an emerging concept. Major payment networks, POS providers, and technology companies now support Tap to Phone or Tap to Pay solutions for eligible merchants. Apple’s Tap to Pay on iPhone, for example, allows businesses to accept in-person contactless payments using only a compatible iPhone and a supported payment app, with no additional terminal required. Visa also describes Tap to Phone as a way for merchants to accept contactless payments on NFC-enabled Android and Apple smartphones they already own.
Key Advantages of SoftPOS
Lower hardware costs
SoftPOS can reduce or eliminate the need for dedicated card readers or countertop terminals, making it especially useful for new businesses, seasonal sellers, mobile merchants, and businesses adding extra checkout points.
More flexible checkout options
Merchants can accept payments at the table, curbside, in the aisle, at events, on deliveries, or in the field. This can reduce checkout friction and help businesses serve customers wherever the sale happens.
Faster deployment
Because the solution runs through an approved app on a compatible device, merchants may be able to start accepting contactless payments faster than with traditional terminal deployment.
Scalable for different business types
SoftPOS can work for small businesses that need a low-cost entry point, as well as larger businesses that want additional mobile checkout lanes, line-busting, or backup payment acceptance.
Supports modern customer payment preferences
SoftPOS solutions can accept contactless cards and digital wallets such as Apple Pay and other mobile wallets, depending on the provider and supported card brands. Clover’s Tap to Pay on iPhone option, for example, supports contactless credit cards, debit cards, Apple Pay, and other digital wallets through the Clover Go app.
Security and Compliance Considerations
SoftPOS solutions are designed to support secure contactless payment acceptance, but merchants should work with a trusted payment provider to make sure the solution is properly configured and supported.
Payment security standards have also evolved. PCI’s earlier CPoC standard was created for contactless payments on commercial off-the-shelf devices, but PCI has announced a formal sunset period for both CPoC and SPoC from May 1, 2026 through October 31, 2026. PCI’s newer MPoC standard provides a more flexible framework for mobile payment acceptance on commercial devices and combines elements of both contactless acceptance and PIN-entry use cases.
Is SoftPOS Right for Your Business?
SoftPOS can be a strong fit for businesses that want a simple, mobile, and hardware-light way to accept in-person contactless payments. It is especially useful for:
- Mobile service businesses
- Pop-up shops and events
- Food trucks and quick-service restaurants
- Tableside or curbside payments
- Delivery and field service teams
- Retail line-busting
- Seasonal or temporary locations
- Backup payment acceptance
SoftPOS may not fully replace a traditional POS terminal for every business, especially if you need receipt printers, cash drawers, barcode scanners, or a full countertop checkout station. However, it can be a powerful add-on for merchants that want more flexibility without adding more equipment.
For merchants, the practical takeaway is simple: choose a payment provider that uses approved, supported SoftPOS technology and can explain what devices, payment types, transaction limits, security requirements, and POS integrations apply to your business.
